The Rewards and Costs of a Celebrity-Fan Relationship

Chapter 1
Introduction

Huge posters, ecstatic faces, loud screams --- all of these present in a celebrity-fan gathering. In a country where everything is a hype, from the latest fashion to the presidency, celebrities and fans are a common sight.
They always go together. A person cannot be called a celebrity if he has no following and of course, there won't be fans if there is no celebrity. Jenson (1992, 10) said that, "The fan is understood to be, at least implicitly, a result of a celebrity - the fan is defined as a response to the star system".
Celebrities in the 21st century may be considered a celebrity in a lot of ways. They may be "extraordinary or they are 'just like us'; they deserve their success or they 'just got lucky'; they are objects of desire and emulation or they are provocations for derision and contempt; they are genuine, down-to-earth people or they are complete phonies" (Turner, 2004).
Celebrities come in many forms. They could be from the tri-media: television, radio and the newspaper. These include performers, newscasters, anchors, disc jockeys, producers, directors, even reporters. Some, as Turner mentioned, are extraordinary and some 'just like us'. The Reality TV shows for one, is a breeding ground of people 'just like us' in becoming celebrities. The Kimerald1 and the Melason2 phenomena have captured the whole nation during and after Kim Chui and Gerald Anderson's and Melai and Jason's stay at the Big Brother House as part of the Pinoy Big Brother3 (Teen Edition) and Pinoy Big Brother (Double Up Edition) shows, respectively.
Ordinary folks who became celebrities were Efren Penaflorida4, declared CNN Hero of the Year in 2009 and Charice Pempengco5, a now world-renowned singer, discovered via another medium which is the Internet, specifically YouTube.com6.
Fashion, sports and all sorts of competitions --- beauty pageants, hotdog-eating contests, math and science quiz bees --- also have its own line up of celebrities. Rajo Laurel7, young fashionista Tim Yap8, Miss Universe 2010 4th Runner-up Maria Venus Raj9, and Manny Pacquiao10 have evolved from ordinary mortals to celebrities. Even Marlene Aguilar and Jason Ivler10, a mother and son tandem involved in a shooting and police raid cover up, became instant celebrities, though their celebrity status is hard to classify, whether they be objects of emulation or contempt.
Politicians and even local heroes like trustworthy taxi drivers may also be considered celebrities. With the wide reach of the different kinds of media, anyone has a chance of becoming a celebrity, which can either last for ten seconds or a lifetime and beyond.
The history of celebrity goes a long way back. Its etymology would tell us that there is a rite of passage before one can be considered a "celebrity". In 1380, the French word celebrite meant "solemn rite or ceremony" and the Latin celibritatum meant "multitude, fame".
According to BBC News, "thousand of years ago, one of the best ways to gain fame was through title, such as a monarch, or to be a warrior whose deeds had a direct impact on the lives of their fellow countrymen" (2004). Dr. Hans Van Wees, a lecturer in Greek history in the University College London said that winners in the ancient Olympic games were treated similar to how we treat our red carpet celebrities. In fact, when they would return home from a game, part of the walls of the city had to be demolished so that they could enter. The city gates were no longer fit to be used as the gates were only for "ordinary mortals". They were also entitled to some freebies like meals and were subjects of poems of notable poets in their time (BBC News).
In ancient Rome, famous and powerful citizens were immortalized by imprinting their faces on coins and being subjects of sculptures and artworks. In 44 BC, Julius Caesar was the first Roman to appear on a coin in his lifetime (BBC News).
Theater actors, comics and gladiators were already considered celebrities in the past. The Elizabethan era produced a celebrity who is still famous until now, Shakespeare. The Victorian era likewise produced Charles Dickens.
The Philippines is a home of thousands of celebrities and most of these come from the entertainment industry. Television and the cinema are major media outlets where celebrities get noticed and etch their name and image in the system of an audience’s life.
Truly, the media has a lot to do with celebrities and how we view them now. With the invention of printing, radio, television and the cinema, and the extensive development of transportation facilities, the local celebrity's popularity has widened.
As the contemporary celebrity's media exposure widened, his fan base also became broader. Jenson (1992, 10) defined fan as "any patron, aficionado or collector that displays interest, affection and attachment, especially for figures in, or aspects of, their chosen field".
Fan came from the word "fanatic", introduced into English around 1550 which means "marked by excessive enthusiasm and often intense uncritical devotion". It originated from the modern Latin fanaticus meaning "insanely but divinely inspired" which referred to a temple or sacred place (Wikipedia, n.d.).
In the past, fans are pictured as rowdy, boisterous, obsessive, and verging on the dangerous. John Lennon12 was murdered in 1980 by his fan. The same thing happened to Selena13, a Mexican-American singer in the 90s who was shot by the president of her fan club. In the local scene, Ara Mina14, a sexy actress turned politician, had to seek a Temporary Protection Order from a judge to keep her fan-stalker away.
Nowadays, fans are the lifeblood of a lot of industries including sports, fashion and entertainment. Fans are responsible for the ticket sales in movies and sporting events. Fans make the latest trend a "trend".
In many countries where celebrities have become a great part of its culture, the Philippines for one, the face of fandom has changed and is continually changing. Technology and other innovations have made possible things that fans in the past have just dreamed of: a close, personal relationship with a celebrity. Giler (2000, 129), as cited by Turner, wrote that, “While celebrities might be relatively inaccessible to most of us, they are nonetheless beings with whom a bilateral relationship is possible, and the wish that this might occur is not an especially irrational desire.” A “relationship” with a celebrity became possible because of high technology, especially the Internet.
Social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter have become venues where fans and celebrities can become “friends” and know details about each other’s life, personal or otherwise. Twitter, most especially, is a good place where fans and celebrities can exchange views about certain issues in politics, show business or current events.
Blog sites are the best places where fans of a certain celebrity would exchange messages of affirmations or criticisms on their particular idol. This is also where important events related to the celebrity are officially announced to the fans. Fans can chat with each other and organize get-togethers or eyeballs (EB).
There are also online chats featured on various shows, variety shows mostly. Telecommunication companies’ promotional add-ons feature direct mobile SMS with celebrities, where a celebrity gets paid for every answer he sends to a fan.
A relationship is not easy to start, build and maintain. This has become more challenging especially when a high-profile celebrity and a stereotyped fan are involved. The celebrity industry, fanship and fandom are moving towards a different phase. These days, fans are important persons that may greatly affect a celebrity's personal life and career. This paper explored on the various motivations why a fan becomes a fan and stays as a fan of a celebrity. At the same time, understanding how a celebrity maintains interaction with his fans is an important factor in the relationship.

Statement of the Problem

The main problem of this study was to find out the rewards and costs present in the relationship of Dingdong Dantes and the DongYanatics.
            Specifically, this study aimed to:
1)    Describe the nature of their relationship
2)    Determine the rewards and costs present in their relationship

Significance of the Study
Celebrities and fans are important aspects of our culture. They are seen, heard and experienced everywhere --- in the local, national and international community, especially in the media.
Celebrities serve many functions such as providing entertainment for the public and serving as good role models and inspiration for others especially among the youth. There are some whose life experiences are set as bad examples and somehow, learning experiences, for the audience. They can also be a source of pride of our country. They have been recipients of awards and have served as ambassadors of goodwill or of a worthy cause. Indeed, celebrities have come a long way from just being mere magazine covers, conversation pieces and entertainers.
Fandom has come a long way too, from being just a group of screaming mob or individuals who may be psychologically challenged. They have become important part of the celebrity industry. In fact, they are people whose feelings, interests, and well-being must be considered in making business decisions involving advertising, programming, marketing and the like.
It is important to know and note the various motivations of a fan for becoming a fan and staying as a fan of a particular celebrity. On the other hand, it is interesting also to know how a celebrity feels about the celebrity-fan relationship and how does he handle such.
This paper will be of significance to the celebrities and fans who want to make the most of their encounter with each other. Even celebrities, much more the fans, need relationships that will bring out the best in them.
People in this business shall also find the information useful which can guide them in creating new products, initiating marketing plans and making business decisions that can make or break the industry. It can also be rewarding for the celebrity, fan, and the media.
This study shall be a good starting point in understanding celebrity-fan relations’ rewards and costs and maximizing the rewards to enrich the lives and experience of all concerned.

Scope and Limitation
This study focused on the rewards and costs present in the celebrity-fan relationship of Dingdong Dantes and the DongYanatics.
This study is only limited to Dingdong Dantes’ case and the two leaders of his fans club. Fan Club management and talent management were not included in this study. Issues and controversies involving the subjects of this study were also excluded. Other fan clubs of Dingdong Dantes were also excluded.
This study shall only be true to the abovementioned subjects and within the months this study was conducted.

Definition of Key Terms
The following terms are used in the study and are defined conceptually and operationally as follows:
Celebrity. A celebrity is a famous person that usually evolves from the sports or the entertainment industries and is highly visible through the media (Turner 2004, 3). This study focused on the celebrity, Dingdong Dantes. Dingdong Dantes was born in August 2, 1980 in Quezon City, Philippines as Jose Sixto Raphael Gonzales Dantes III. He is popularly known as “Dingdong” or simply “Dong”. He is not only a director, actor, model and host, but also an active volunteer in the National Youth Commission (NYC).
Celebrity-fan Relationship. This is the kind of relationship that a celebrity and a fan have. The relationship referred to in this study is the interpersonal relationship of Dingdong Dantes with the leaders of his fans club.
Fan. A fan is an ardent devotee or an enthusiast of a celebrity (The Free Dictionary, n.d.) A fan is also a patron who displays interest, affection and attachment, especially for figures in, or aspects of, their chosen field (Jenson 1992, 9).
Rewards. This is defined as a satisfying return or result; profit; positive reinforcement. Also, it means to satisfy or gratify; recompense. (The Free Dictionary, n.d.) In this study, it is used to refer to the various benefits or perceived benefits of both parties in the relationship.
Cost. This is the expenditure of something, such as time or labor, necessary for the attainment of a goal. It also means to cause to lose, suffer, or sacrifice (The Free Dictionary, n.d.). In this study, it refers to the things, tangible or intangible, that each of the parties had to give up in order to maintain the relationship.

Chapter 2
Review of Related Literature

This chapter presents the various related literature and studies gathered related to the study. Sources include books, articles in books, compilations, graduate theses and online resources such as journals, newspapers and magazines.
In the celebrityculture.net (n.d.) website, celebrity culture is defined as the “culture of popularizing certain people who have certain attributes that society deem exceptional”. The article discussed the negative effects of the current celebrity culture and how celebrities have become negative role models for the adolescents and teenagers. This negative modeling includes drug and alcohol abuse and casual sex.
A similar article but of a Filipino author, Bong Austere, also mentioned that our fascination with celebrities and the expanding and popularity of this celebrity culture is brought about by the lack of other role models in our society today (Manila Standard Today, June 9, 2010).
In a BBC UK news feature, “Celebrity Culture Harms Pupils”, a survey for the Association of Teachers and Lecturers (ATL) produced a result that 60% of their pupils aspired to be David Beckham, a sport celebrity. Many pupils also believed that academic success was unnecessary because they believe that they would be able to make their fame and fortune easily via a reality TV show. It also mentioned that some celebrity behaviors encouraged underage drinking and antisocial behavior. The last part of the article mentioned that even if there are a lot of negative things said about celebrities, there are also those celebrities who “help in schools and community projects, promote sport and healthy lifestyles, take part in anti drug campaigns and encourage children to stay on in education and to stay safe” (BBC News UK, March 14, 2008).
The first three articles dealt with how celebrity creates impact to their audience through the various forms of media. Celebrities are liked by their audience for reasons such as having a lavish lifestyle that the audience wants to be a part of, their image, their appearance, or their skill. The present undertaking has a certain degree of similarity in the articles cited in the aspect of likeability or sociability of the celebrities and how fans react to these things. The positive and negative modeling of the celebrities was discussed in the articles while this paper discussed the rewards and costs present in a celebrity-fan relationship.
Joli Jenson’s article, “Fandom as Pathology: The Consequences of Characterization” in the book, Adoring Audience: Fan Culture and Popular Media (1992) mentioned that fans are generally classified into two types: the obsessed individual and the hysterical crowd. He mentioned that patron, collectors and aficionados may also be considered as “fans” since they also display some form of attachment or interest in a craft, sport, celebrity or any field. She described the various characteristics of a fan as described by the socio-psychologists and by the media. She mentioned that all of us are fans in some ways. But because of the supposed culture of the low art and high art, the fans of the popular media are discriminated against. In the article, she stressed that the same attributes are seen even in the fans of high art, for example, a fan of an operatic singer. A fan, whether of high or low art, would seek autographs, line up in concerts, collect memorabilia and would want to know and meet the celebrity personally. At the end of the article, she suggested that "we respect and value other people as if they were us, because they always are .... Avoid, assiduously, the seduction of separateness that underlies the description of fans as pathological". She further stated that "Fandom is an aspect of how we make sense of the world, in relation to mass media, in relation to our historical, social, cultural location".
This article was found useful in the current study. This promotes that we are all fans and that fans seen in a different light are also people like us who have needs and that these needs may be addressed by the celebrity-fan relations. The current study also wants to understand fans in the light of their interpersonal relationship with their celebrity idol.
An article in Biotech Week stated an interesting insight about how fans treat and emulate their celebrity crushes. The article has mentioned that a fan’s attraction to a “celebrity crush” can actually lead the fan to discover characteristics that he or she may like in a future partner. The article emphasized that contemplating on the qualities one likes about a celebrity crush can lead to the discovery of personal insights and identification of needs that one seeks in a love relationship (Fans, 2010). This article was useful in this study since the current study also tackled the qualities that are likeable in a celebrity and how these qualities were perceived by the fans. This study however did not compare the qualities of the celebrity with the qualities of significant persons in the life of the fans.
In Reysen and Branscombe's research, “Fanship and Fandom: Comparisons between Sport and Non-sport Fans” (2010), the similarities and differences between sport fans and other type of fans in terms of fanship and fandom were presented. Fanship is defined as team identification; it is the individual connection between the object or celebrity. Fandom on the other hand is identification with others who share a connection with the object or celebrity. This is similar to group identity. Reysen and Branscombe's research is composed of four interrelated studies. Study 1 assessed fanship in any of the interests like sport teams, TV shows or musical groups. Study 2 correlated the fanship to social desirability, especially that of a sport fan using the Sport Spectator Identification Scale (SSIS) and the Marlowe-Crowne Social Desirability (MCSD) scale. The MCSD scale measured the individual degree of sociability and need for approval. Study 3 provided data on fan behavior, social distance and fanship. The results of the 3rd study showed that greater fanship is related to more fan behavior and a greater desire to keep non-fans at a distance from one's life. The last study measured fanship, perceived entitativity, identification with other fans as a group and collective happiness. The results clearly established positive correlations among the four items. Ingroups and outgroups existed and fanship is related to positive social identity and collective happiness.
The study is similar to the current study that it concerned itself with the identities that may be gathered in fanship and fandom. However, this study only dealt with the fans' personal identity related to the object celebrity or the fanship factor. Relationships with fellow fans, collective happiness and the issue of ingroups and outgroups were not included.
Another article on fandom and the music industry featured the various functions of Internet-based fan clubs. In  Paul Theberge’s “Everyday Fandom: Fan Clubs, Blogging, and the Quotidian Rhythms of the Internet (2005), he mentioned that music fan clubs nowadays serve functions not only for the fans but to the music industry. They serve as promotion and a form of direct marketing for the industry, at the same time creating a sense of identity and belongingness for the fans. The article also presented a different take on how we see fan clubs. Theberge mentioned that, “It is precisely not the spectacularity, but the ‘everydayness’ of fan-club activities on the Internet that is important.” This emphasized the daily interactions present in the Internet fan clubs and the sense of community among the members of the club despite the spatial and temporal limitations. It also tackled the various promotional and merchandising activities associated with Internet fans club. This article is useful in the current study in the sense that it provided information on how the fan clubs create that sense of belongingness and community. The current study though focused on the personal, face-to-face encounters of fans with their celebrity idol.
A study conducted by Stella Chia and Yip Ling Poo (2009) entitled “Media Celebrities and Fans: An Examination of Adolescents’ Media Usage and Involvement with Entertainment Celebrities” concluded that the respondents treated the celebrities as friends. The study utilized 621 Singaporean adolescents, aged 11 to 18. It showed the 3 aspects of adolescents’ involvement with celebrities, that is, entertainment, social values and intense-personal feelings and borderline-pathological tendencies. These were associated with the adolescents’ media consumption, with the association between intense-personal feelings and media consumption a personal one. The study is similar to the current undertaking in the sense that this study also dealt with how fans relate with celebrities. The difference is that Chia and Poo’s study used quantitative method while this study used the qualitative method focusing on the close personal celebrity-fan relations.
Theoretical Framework
This study used John Thibaut and Harold Kelley’s Social Exchange Theory. The Social Exchange Theory (Littlejohn 2008, 203) is based on the socio-psychological tradition of the human communication theories which states the economic proposition that human beings make decisions based on costs and rewards. In other words, if something will be very costly, one will think twice before doing it. If the results could be very rewarding, a person may go ahead, despite the costs and rewards.
The process of social exchange in human interaction according to Thibaut and Kelley states that an individual seeks to maximize rewards and minimize costs. This is also known as the MiniMax principle. In fact, one will reveal information about himself, maintain a relationship with someone or continue that relationship in a deeper level, if the cost-reward ratio is acceptable to that individual.
Partners assess rewards and costs at a given moment and use information they have gathered to predict the rewards and costs in the future. As long as rewards outweigh costs, a couple, partners or friends or in this case, a celebrity and a fan, will become increasingly intimate. Increasing intimacy is a process of judging whether increasingly personal communication will be worth it or not.
The Social Exchange Theory was used to shed light on the rewards and costs incurred in the celebrity-fan relationship.
The Para-Social Interaction Theory was also used in this study. Donald Horton and R. Richard Wohl (1956, 215), proponents of the theory, state that, one of the striking characteristics of the new mass media --- radio, television, and the movies --- is that they give the illusion of face-to-face relationship with the performer. The performers or the personae, are met as if they were in the circle of one’s peers.
According to Horton and Wohl (1956, 216):
Para-social relations may be governed by little or no sense of obligation, effort, or responsibility on the part of the spectator. He is free to withdraw at any moment. If he remains involved, these para-social relations provide a framework within which much may be added by fantasy. The crucial difference in experience obviously lies in the lack of effective reciprocity, and this the audience cannot normally conceal from itself. To be sure, the audience is free to choose among the relationships offered, but it cannot create new ones. The interaction, characteristically, is one-sided, nondialectical, controlled by the performer, and not susceptible of mutual development. There are, of course, ways in which the spectators can make their feelings known to the performers … Whoever finds the experience unsatisfying has only the option to withdraw.

This theory was used to understand the perceptions of the fans regarding the rewards and cost present in the celebrity-fan relationship.
The following framework illustrates how these theories were used in the study.

Figure 1: Theoretical Framework of the study

Figure 1 illustrates that when a celebrity and a fan find more rewards than costs in a relationship, they are most likely to pursue and maintain that relationship. The broken lines around the relationship represent the para-social context where the celebrity-fan relationship exists.  The red lines represent perceptions. Therefore, there may be actual rewards and actual costs of both celebrity and fan, same as “perceived” rewards and costs. Para-social relationship is in itself a perception of a relationship.

Chapter 3
Methods and Procedures

Research Design
This study used the qualitative method of research. Qualitative research aims to gather an in-depth understanding of human behavior and the reasons that govern such behavior. The qualitative method investigates the why and how of decision making, not just what, where, when. Smaller but focused samples are more often needed, rather than large samples (Wikipedia, n.d.).

Informants
The informants of study were the celebrity Dingdong Dantes and the two (2) leaders of his DongYanatics Fans Club, Gail and Mel.

Instruments
The instrument used was an Interview Guide for Dingdong Dantes and the leaders of his DongYanatics fans club.

Data Gathering
The researcher made initial contact with the celebrity in study, Dingdong Dantes, through a text message to a common friend, Dino Badilla, who is a former official in the National Youth Commission (NYC) where Dingdong Dantes is a youth volunteer. Mr. Badilla sent a message to Dingdong asking him if it is possible to interview the leaders of his fans clubs. Dingdong replied in the affirmative and after an hour, he sent the contact number of his fan club president, Gail. Dingdong’s text messages were likewise forwarded to the researcher for information.
Contact was made to Gail, a doctor by profession, and a schedule of an interview was immediately set on September 14, 2010 (Tuesday). The interview was set at 7:00 p.m. but at around 5 p.m.. On the same day, Doc Gail sent a message to the researcher that she won’t be able to make the 7:00 p.m. schedule because she had to drop by Dingdong’s place to drop off some fresh fruits for the celebrity. It was reset at 9:00 p.m. The researcher went to Health Way in SM North Edsa where Doc Gail holds clinic on the designated time but she had a lot of patients and so the researcher was asked to wait. The interview officially commenced at 10:30 p.m. at Pancake House in SM North EDSA The Block and finished at 12:30 a.m. in a bench outside the restaurant as the restaurant closes at 12 midnight.
Doc Gail recommended that the researcher interview another leader of the fans club, Ma’am Mel. Mel’s number was given to the researcher and the following day the researcher immediately contacted Mel. Mel didn’t reply to the text message and so early that evening, the researcher called Mel. They were able to talk and an interview was set on September 16 (Thursday). On September 16, as the researcher was on her way to meet the interviewee, she received a text message from Mel postponing the interview to September 18 (Saturday) because of her busy schedule.
At 1:30 p.m. of September 18, the interview with Mel was done.
After the interviews with Doc Gail and Ma’am Mel, the researcher busied herself with reading books, articles and other materials that can shed light and help her analyze the data from the interviews with the leaders of the fans club. It was also this time that the researcher contacted her college friend, Karen Pagsolingan, to help her in getting an interview with Dingdong Dantes. Karen Pagsolingan is a UP Speech Communication graduate who now works in Philippine Entertainment Portal (pep.ph) as a Managing Editor. The interview was set two weeks after the interview with the fan club leaders because Dingdong just got out of the hospital and needed to rest. The interview was set on October 3 (Sunday) through Pao, Dingdong’s road manager.
The researcher contacted Pao regarding the time and venue of the interview. He set it to be at the Party Pilipinas show at 1:00 p.m.. The researcher had asked an orgmate to assist her during the interview. At quarter to one on October 3, the researcher and her orgmate arrived in Party Pilipinas backstage. The researcher called Pao via a mobile phone and Pao ushered them to Dingdong Dantes’ dressing room. Pao introduced the researcher to Dingdong and Dingdong stood up from his massage chair and had a little chitchat with them regarding the National Youth Commission and his work there as volunteer. The researcher brought him NYC pamphlets and folders featuring his latest work. After a few minutes, the official interview commenced. The interview lasted for about 40 minutes.

Data Analysis
The data were analyzed using the Social Exchange Theory of Thibaut and Kelley and the Para-social interaction Theory of Horton and Wohl.

Chapter 4
Presentation and Interpretation of Data

Dingdong Dantes
Dingdong Dantes (http://www.dingdongdantes.net/biography/, accessed October 3, 2010) was born as Jose Sixto Gonzales Dantes III in August 2, 1980 in Quezon City, Philippines. Dingdong, or “Dong” to many, is an Atenean, having taken the course, Interdisciplinary and Communication Arts in Ateneo de Manila University. Dong started as print and commercial model at age 9, and later on became a member of the all-male dance group, Abztract Dancers. His debut on Philippine television came when he became a member of the cast of the youth-oriented Saturday show, T.G.I.S. or Thank God It’s Sabado. His role as Inaki became one of the popular characters in the show. He moved on to work in movie and television projects with Antoinette Taus, a screen partner who later on became his girlfriend. Projects included the movie, Honey My Love So Sweet and the television drama, Anna Karennina. When Antoinette Taus and Dingdong broke up, after the former decided to pursue her film and singing career abroad, Dong became a solo artist. More noteworthy projects came. These included TV shows Sana Ikaw Na Nga, Twin Hearts, and movies Magkapatid, Pangarap Ko Ang Ibigin Ka.
In 2004, he became a host of the suspense-thriller TV show, Wag Kukurap. This project gave him the opportunity to try his directing skills. It was also during this time that he ventured into hosting. His hosting stints included the Binibining Pilipinas search and StarStruck. He was also King Ybrahim in GMA 7 network’s fantasy-novela production, Encantadia where he was paired with Karylle, his off-screen and on-screen girlfriend at that time.
In 2007, he landed the role of Sergio in Marimar. This role, many believe, is the role that catapulted him to unbelievable popularity. Marimar is the Filipino adaptation of the Mexican telenovela of the same title. This is the project that paired him with Marian Rivera, who later on became his girlfriend after his controversy-filled relationship with Karylle ended. He was also named the No. 1 Bachelor of 2007 by Cosmopolitan Philippines and was awarded Most Popular Actor in a Drama Series by USTV Students’ Choice Awards.
In 2008, he played Fredo in Dyesebel; again, a telenovela with Marian Rivera. He was also the only Filipino who made it in the list of 25 Sexiest Men in the World by Television Special.
His recent projects included primetime’s Stairway to Heaven and Ang Babaeng Hinugot sa Aking Tadyang, and movies One True Love and You To Me Are Everything. He has also become a bench underwear model. Outside of showbusiness, he is a youth volunteer of the National Youth Commission and has put up his own foundation, Youth Empowerment Service Pinoy Foundation or the YES Pinoy Foundation. He also served as an active supporter and endorser of President Benigno Simeon Aquino during the 2010 National Elections. He is currently working on his latest project, Endless Love.

The DongYanatics Leaders
Dingdong Dantes has a lot of organized fans club. These include the DongYanatics, the Dynamics, DongYan Forever, DongYan Exclusive, DongYan Fanatics and the Solid Dingdong. The DongYanatics serves as the umbrella organization for all the other DongYan fan clubs. DongYan stands for nicknames of Dingdong (Dong) and reel and real life loveteam, Marian Rivera (Yan).
Gail is one of the leaders of the DongYanatics. She is in-charge of Public Relations work for the group. She is single, 45 years old and an Endocrinologist. She first encountered Dingdong Dantes on YouTube. She was browsing the website and saw a Christmas teaser-commercial of the show, Marimar. After seeing the advertisement, she was hooked. She also became a regular viewer of Marimar. She then became an active member of pinoyexchange.com, a website that features open fora and message boards for visitors about a variety of topics that concerns the Filipino everywhere. She also became a regular audience in Dingdong’s shows. She flew to Los Angeles, California, USA to watch Dingdong and Marian’s concert, where she stayed in the hotel where Dingdong and Marian were staying. A fellow fan gave her Dong’s number and she introduced herself via a text message to him. It was then that she caught the attention of Dingdong’s camp. After the event, she was already being invited by Kuya Perry, Dingdong manager, to fan club meetings and other activities. Her activity and views made her one of the unofficial leaders of the DongYanatics. Her presence in Dong and Yan’s shows, active participation in fan club activities and initiative in various fan club projects and events sealed her status as the PR person for the club. This is also the time that she was able to text and call Dingdong on a variety of concerns such as informing him of fan club activities and efforts, inviting him to fan club and non-fan club occasions and giving him feedback on his interviews, work performance, etc. Her being an active fan, made Dingdong recognize her as one of the official leaders of the club. Writers and reporters have also done the same. She is also involved in volunteer work with Dingdong. These include brainstorming for activities related to YES Pinoy Foundation, doing work for Ondoy victims and helping Dingdong campaign for President Aquino in the 2010 elections.
Mel is the other leader of the DongYanatics. She is married, 42 years old and a former teacher. She is in-charge of the administration and coordination of the club. She was first introduced to the world of Dingdong Dantes when she was doing an errand for a former boss’ wife by accompanying her students in watching SOP, then a Sunday noontime show of GMA 7. Before this, she knew of Dingdong only via the television as she always sees him on TV shows on primetime. After her first visit on SOP, she had become a regular audience of the show until it has become Party Pilipinas. Because of her visibility as a member of the audience of the show, she also caught the attention of Kuya Perry. She has become a regular fan of Dingdong, attending shows here and there. She is also an active member of pinoyexchange.com where she met Gail.

Rewards of the Relationship for the DongYanatics Leaders
A celebrity-fan relationship can be very rewarding for the fans. These rewards may be real rewards and sometimes, these may just be “perceived” rewards. Para-social Interaction Theory states that, “whoever finds the experience unsatisfying has only the option to withdraw.” The mere fact the leaders of the fans club continue to be active in the organization is a proof that this relationship has given them more rewards than costs. The following are the rewards that they enjoy as part of the relationship and as leaders of the club.
Prestige
When Gail and Mel were recognized as leaders of the DongYanatics, it was something that made them popular. They became popular among fellow fans, among the members of the media and showbusiness. As Gail puts it:
Pag may mga events ako sa Diabetes Awareness Week’s Diabetes Expo organized by the Diabetes Center of the Philippines, na i-invite ko yan si Dong kahit na walang TF … May mga events din na I get special treatment. Like when I sit sa harap or sa unahan near the stage. Kakaway ako sa mg tao na parang nagsasabing, “Dito ako nakaupo.” May representative yung grupo … Tapos sa DWIZ, nababanggit kami ng reporter na sinasabing buti pa ang grupo nina Gail, behaved --- hindi gaya ng ibang mga fans dyan.

Aside from these, their names were also mentioned by Dingdong Dantes himself in some shows, thanking them for their support to him and Marian Rivera. They are being quoted by other fans and reporter in the Internet, newspapers and radio programs. Gail also was able let Dong sign her Christmas gift cards for her colleagues and friends. This was the time when Dingdong had a Book Drive with National Bookstore and instead of buying Christmas gifts for her colleagues and friends, she bought books for the book drive. She gave her friends Christmas cards, telling them that their names were submitted as donors in Dong’s book drive. She asked Dingdong to sign the cards as well, recognizing their contribution to the campaign.
Gail and Mel are also well-known in the circle of other Dingdong fan clubs, Marian fan clubs and the DongYan fan clubs.
Jenson (1992, 16) states that “Contact with, and recognition by, the persona (or celebrity) transfers some of his prestige and influence on the active fan.” This is very true especially in our celebrity-hungry society where the mere mention of a celebrity’s name can spell success in various circumstances, be it a government campaign or a product advertisement or in politics.

Perceived Importance
According to Gail, she serves as the “bridge” between Dingdong’s fans abroad and Dingdong. There was one time when she went to Vancouver, Canada and she got an invitation to visit another fan in Toronto. The fellow fan spent for her plane tickets to Toronto and back. She stayed for a night in Toronto and brought with her back to Vancouver, then to Philippines, the presents the fellow fan gave her and for Dingdong and for the other members of the DongYanatics. She further states that:
Nung 2009, nag celebrate sya ng birthday nya kasama ang mga fans. Sa GMA ginanap yung birthday dinner. Andun kami sa dinner na hinanda ni Dingdong. Bawat fans club may representative na nakaupo dun sa table. Kasama namin dun sa dinner yung mga GMA executives pati na rin yung family ni Dong. Yung ibang fans na hindi na nakapasok, may pagkain din sa labas. Hindi ko sure kung buffet or naka-styro ata. Sabi ni Dingdong nun, “Either they celebrate with me or I don’t invite them.”

Gail and Mel are able to speak to Dingdong and to the members of the media on behalf of the group. They are also members of the Brainstorming Team for the YES Pinoy Foundation. Both of them are also able to text Dingdong their feedback on various things like his performance in the movies or TV shows, his answers on interviews, etc. Gail also served as a judge in one of Dingdong’s activities, the Boses ng Kabataan Competition.

Perceived Power
The leaders have the perception of being able to make things happen. The following lines reveal these perceptions.
On the DongYan loveteam:
Dati nung may number pa ako ni Marian, iti-text ko si Dong na nakita ko sa ganitong show si Marian at sasabihin ko yung sinabi nya. Ganun din si Marian. Pag may show si Dingdong, iti-text ko si Marian ng mga sinabi ni Dingdong. Parang ganun. Tapos nakakakilig mga sagot nila. Parang kumbaga kami yung nagpasimula ng loveteam nila. Parang may kinalaman kami kaya sila na develop sa isa’t isa (Gail).

On handling fans’ decisions and emotions and fans’ contribution:
Naalala ko nun nung nag concert sya and at the end of the concert nagpa thank you sya kay Karylle, kay K. Madaming nagalit na DongYanatics nun kay Dong. Bakit daw nagpa thank you si Dong kay K. Pero na-pacify ko yung mga fans. Kinausap ko sila. I said that I trust Dingdong na may magandang purpose sya kung bakit nya sinabi yun and nakinig naman sila sa akin. So parang ganun ang role ko sa kanya … Pag may mga chismis about Dingdong and Marian, aayusin namin yan (Gail).

Pag may issue kunyari sa pila sa SOP, I talk with the group leaders and na re-realize naman nila na karamihan sa issues ay mabababaw. Nag o-organize din ako ng mga parties for the other fans (Mel).

I get satisfaction in making the public more aware about Dingdong and Marian. Mas nakikilala ang mga idols pag nakakausap ito personally ng mga fans. They become more accessible to the fans (Mel).

I wanted to elevate the standard of fan. Yung may afford, may say. They (the network management) better listen to us. We have the market for albums, magazines. We’re not the stereotype fans. Pag kinuha nila si Dingdong as endorser or ano pa man, fans club ang gagalaw (Gail).

We want to raise the level of pagiging fan. Kaya may mga outreach programs kami, medical missions. We involve ourselves in social awareness activities (Mel).

We can affect programming decisions. If they don’t give Dingdong and Marian a teleserye sa primetime, ang US-based fans namen ay mag pu-pull out ng subscription sa Pinoy TV. Nag-send kami nyan ng emails sa management ng GMA 7. And the management also does things to help sway the fans, temper their sentiments (Gail).

On other things concerning Dingdong:
Nung Ondoy, nag volunteer kaming mga fans nya. Kami ang nag pack ng mga relief goods. Nung eleksyon, kami rin ang gumalaw (Gail).

The incident where the leaders can pacify the negative feelings or anger of other fans implying that they understand the reasons behind the actions and words of their celebrity idol is explained by the para-social theory (Horton, 216). It says that, “The fan comes to believe that he ‘knows’ the persona more intimately and profoundly than others do; that he ‘understands’ his character and appreciates his values and motives.” This is a perception of power, that a person knows more than what others know and that knowledge can be a basis of their perceived power.
The fans ask the network management to create shows for their idol. This happens not just to impose their “power” over the network but this is also a call for self-preservation. When their idol leaves the airwaves, they will see less of him, meaning the popularity of the celebrity lessens. When this happens, all the other rewards fade.  The celebrity-fan relationship may even be dissolved because the relationship exists only because of the “celebrity status” of the idol in the first place. A celebrity cannot be a celebrity when he is not seen in any of the forms of media, which is the measure of popularity.

Perceived Connection
Closely related with the prestige of being associated with a celebrity, the perceived closeness is also very rewarding for a fan.
Gail and Mel mentioned that they can give him feedback on various matters. They boost him up so that he will be inspired just the thought that the fans are there for him. And there are times when they are able to meet and bond with Dingdong’s family members like his mom and his aunt. They were given the chance to eat with them on some occasions.
Gail constantly brings fruits for Dingdong. She prints articles about Dingdong and Marian and gives it to them. Mel and Gail can talk to Dingdong via text messaging and phone calls. Although Gail emphasized that she sends him texts, not call, most of the time. She said that a text message can be answered by Dong at any time of the day, while a phone call would usually disturb him. She also mentioned that it hurts her if Dingdong cannot answer her phone call. So, to keep her from being hurt by an unanswered call, as well as, keep from disturbing Dong, she would just text him. If ever there is a need to call him, she would ask permission via a text message first.
They also get special treatment from Dingdong. They can give Dingdong a more intimate greeting like beso-beso, amidst the crowd. They can also hold his hand and whisper to him about anything in front of other people. On birthdays and other special occasions, Dingdong gives them a video message that validates the relationship, the friendship. In some instances, he attends these special occasions just to be with them.
When Dong also acknowledges them on TV shows, radio guestings and mall shows, it tells them that there is connection.
According to Horton and Wohl (1956, 216), “The persona (or the celebrity) can claim and achieve an intimacy with what are literally crowds of strangers, and this intimacy … extremely influential with, and satisfying for, the great numbers who willingly receive it and share in it.” They also added that “every attempt possible is made to strengthen the illusion of reciprocity and rapport in order to offset the inherent impersonality of the media themselves.” The effort that a celebrity makes to make his fans club members “connected” is an effort to maintain the relationship. The celebrity feels that it is proper as well as rewarding, to reciprocate this connection.

Access to Inside Information
Being able to have access to personal information that concerns a celebrity is a show of trust. According to Gail and Mel, they are trusted by Dingdong. As Gail said:
DD trusts me. There are information that are not for public consumption and I can get hold of that information, nalalaman ko ang details before pa makalabas sa media, sa mga tao … Nalalaman ko rin in advance kung ano ang isusuot ni Dong sa ganitong event.

Mel also said that Dingdong treats his fans fairly but he has varying degrees of trust and closeness with them. One said, “Yun yung maganda sa pagiging organized kase mas madami kaming access”.
Rewards of the Relationship for Dingdong Dantes
The celebrity-fan relationship, just like any other relationship, in order to prosper, must be a two-way street. If there are rewards for the fans, there should also be rewards for the celebrity. The relationship of Dingdong with his fans continues because of the following rewards he gets.

Security in his Career
A celebrity will not be called a celebrity if he has no fans. And one cannot continue his celebrity status without the support of his fans. Dingdong said that in his showbiz career, he recognizes the help and support of his fans. He states, “Dapat 50-50 sa lahat ng bagay. Hindi lang naman talent ang kelangan para maging successful ka dito, syempre yung mga fans, napakalaking bagay nyan.”

Support for his YES Pinoy Foundation and other Projects
All out support is given to Dingdong by his fans even for his other interests. Mel said that as fans, they have to support their idol’s advocacy otherwise, they would be left out in what’s happening in the life of their celebrity idol. She said that she wants to support Dingdong even if he decides to retire from showbusiness.
Dingdong is thankful for the support of his fans, even for his non-showbiz activities:
Malaki ang naitulong talaga ng fans ko sa Foundation. Nag donate sila ng 1 million, I think more than 1 million nga, sa Foundation ko. Tapos, I invite them to be part of the Brainstorming Team. Kasama sila dun. Parte sila dun.

Provision of “Logical” Inputs
According to Dingdong, the “logical” inputs or feedback that the fans give him every now and then, are actually very helpful for him. He considers them and tries to improve based on their feedback on his performance in movies and shows or sometimes, feedback on how he fares on interviews.

Inspiration in his Work
Dingdong stated that he do things not just for himself, but for the fans as well. He said that if you do things only for yourself, you will not stay long in the industry. He recognizes that the fans have clout and can make or break a celebrity. But if he is inspired in his work because of the fans, they can also feel the sincerity in him. When he is inspired and he performs well in his work, it is also his way of giving back to the fans.

Connection
Dingdong has repeatedly mentioned that he does not consider his fans as fans, but as friends. He said that in the different aspects of our lives, we encounter people who can be considered as friends. He said, “Meron tayong friends sa school. Meron tayong friends sa work. Friends sa club or sa organization. Sila, mga friends ko dito sa work ko. Sa pagiging artista ko.”

Costs of the Relationship for the DongYanatics Leaders
Time Consuming
Being a leader of the DongYanatics Fans Club is time consuming because of the constant demands to attend mall shows, TV and movie tapings. Tapings would go as far as the Ilocos region and shows can be held in a nearby SM mall or as far as LA, California. Mel is a regular member of the audience of SOP then and Party Pilipinas now and she sacrifices Sundays with her family just to attend these shows. Since they are also the leaders of the club, they have meetings to attend with Dingdong’s manager and have other activities with fellow fans.

Expensive
Gail admits that there are times when she had to cut her clinic hours just to attend a mall show of Dingdong and Marian. She drives her own car and she spends for her own gas. Having coffee with fellow fans in expensive coffee shops where Dong and Marian frequents add to the cost of being an active fan. When they visit Dingdong in his movie sets, they spend for their own transportation and for the presents they give to Dingdong and the staff in the movie set.
Mel on the other hand, has a husband who works abroad but her husband does not know her being a leader of the fans club. She need not work but it is improper to get money from her husband’s financial support to the family so she decided to get a part-time job as a tutor to provide for her activities in the fans club.

Costs of the Relationship for Dingdong Dantes
Time Consuming
Having a fans club can also be time consuming for a celebrity. One reason for this is just the number of text messages a celebrity gets in a day and the amount of time it would take him to answer their queries just to be polite and to keep in touch. Also, apart from his busy taping schedules and other commitments, he has to attend fans’ activities.

Threat to Personal Security
Dingdong mentioned of a former fan, who was also very active when he was still with his former girlfriend, Karylle. When the relationship ended, it triggered the anger of his fan whose loyalty actually lies with Karylle. He was bombarded with messages of threat and so he distanced himself from the fan. Another fan also, a pre-school teacher, became sort of obsessed in giving Dingdong her pieces of advice. In Dong’s words, “Talo pa nya ang manager ko kung makapag bigay ng advice!” When he noticed that the fan was going overboard, he distanced himself.

Chapter 5
Summary, Conclusions and Recommendations

Summary
This study was conducted to find out the rewards and costs present in the relationship of Dingdong Dantes and the DongYanatics. Specifically, this study aimed to describe the nature of their relationship and determine the rewards and costs present in their relationship. The informants of the study were Dingdong Dantes and the leaders of the DongYanatics fans club, Gail and Mel.
The study showed that there are five (5) rewards of the relationship for the DongYanatics. These are prestige, perceived importance, perceived power, perceived connection and access to inside information. Dingdong Dantes also recognizes the rewards the celebrity-fan relationship gives him. It provides security in his career, gives support for his YES Pinoy Foundation and other interests and gives “logical” inputs for him to improve in his craft. The relationship also serves as an inspiration for him and provides connection with his following.
The cost of the relationship for the DongYanatics leaders is the fact that maintaining the relationship is time consuming and expensive. Dingdong also finds the relationship time consuming and sometimes, can be a threat to his personal security.

Conclusion
The rewards that the DongYanatics leaders get out of the relationship were intangible rewards and had something to do with the fans’ self-esteem. These were connected to their personal life. Their rewards also were real rewards but most of them were perceived rewards.
Power in the media and showbusiness cannot be fully attributed to the fans alone. The industry is a venue of a whole different world of powerplay. There are also instances that the management and the media would make sure that the fans “feel” their “power” to make things happen. And since the management and the people in the industry have incredibly manipulated this, the real power lies in them.
The rewards that Dingdong Dantes enjoyed from the relationship were tangible and measurable rewards and had something to do with those that will make him maintain his celebrity status. The rewards were connected to his professional life or his career.
The rewards gathered from the celebrity-fan relationship were opposites. For the fans, the rewards made a positive impact in their personal lives whereas for the celebrity, it made a positive impact to his professional life. On the other hand, the costs were opposites also. It costs the fans their professional life, sometimes being absent from work and spending hard-earned money to be able to maintain the relationship. While for Dingdong, his personal security is put on the line in the efforts to maintain good relationship with his fans.

Recommendations
A great celebrity-fan relationship is needed by show business to maintain harmony in the industry and maximize the benefits these relationships bring. An organized fan club is better than just being a mob of screaming individuals. Talent Management is a field; it wouldn’t hurt if Fan Management can be an organized field also. Operations would run as how volunteer organizations are run.
It is recommended that the following researches shall also be conducted:
1)    A research exploring how a fan club as an organization works
2)    A research on other celebrity-fan relationships

APPENDIX C
INTERVIEW WITH DR. GAIL

INTERVIEW WITH DR. GAIL, 45

How did you become a fan of DD?
Was browsing youtube. Saw a teaser/commercial for a local show, Marimar. It was a Xmas ad of Marimar in 2007. Then I got hooked.

I am a member of pinoyexchange.com and naging active ako sa pag comment. Then, kuya perry, the manager of DD would usually update us thru the website.

DongYanatics Fan Club. Kilig na kilig kami sa chemistry nila ni Marianne. Konting hawak, kilos lang kinikilig kami.

We dont wanna be called a Fans Club and ayaw namin na mag elect ng officers. Parang may spokesperson lang or representative.

I went to LA to watch their concert. I stayed in the same hotel where DD and Marianne stayed. Tapos I was able to get the celphone number of DD. Isang US-based fan ang nagbigay sa akin. Madami ding Solid DD at Solid Marianne.

Then, album nya. Dance album.

Buffet or naka-styro ata. Sabi ni DD, "either they celebrate with me or I dont invite them".

Scholarship for Children ng militar. Lalo na yung mga namatayan ng magulang. Grandpa ay Marines. Registered reserved Marines sya. Kung Hindi sya artista, malamang sundalo sya.

I think yung US fans ni DD donated 1M as seed money for the foundation.

Nung nag Ondoy, nagvolunteer ang mga fans nya. Nung campaign period, nag volunteer din mga fans nya.

Ako I spoke on behalf of his supporters.

Direction for foundation kasama kami.
siguro dahil available ako lagi, I text him my feedback. Pag may mga mall shows/tours, andun ako lagi. Dito (SM north) hanggang fairview.

Parang ganun. Tapos nakakakilig sagot nila. Parang kumbaga kami yung nagpasimula ng loveteam nila. Parang may kinalaman kami kaya sila na develop.

Kaya siguro kami naging close dahil marunong ako kumiliti. I dont call him. Kung tatawag ako, nagpapa alam muna ako. I just text him. I respect the distance, na actor sya and fan lang ako. I go out of my way to let him know that I exist. I give him feedback from fans. He knows that we go out of the way for him. Parang yun din role ko, to boost him up, para ma inspire sya na andito kami for him. Ganun.

Naalala ko nun nung nag concert sya and at the end of the concert nagpa thank you sya kay Karylle, kay K. Madami nagalit na DongYanatics nun kay DD.

Isipin mo pag SOP or Party Pilipinas talagang nanood si tita, yung mommy nya. San ka nakakita ng ganun!

Tapos pag may mga events ako sa with the association Diabetes Awareness Week's Diabetes Expo organized by the Diabetes Center of the Philippines.

DD and Marianne have so much chemistry. Their loveteam somehow gives us a promise that there is someone for you in this world no matter the circumstances.

DD trusts me. There are information that are not for public consumption and I can get hold of that information, nalalaman ko ang details before pa makalabas sa media, sa mga tao.

Somehow we were part of the journey. Kilig. We were instrumental sa pagkaka developan nina DD and Marianne. I trust that he is a good person, kasama na ang buong family nya. Nakaka bonding ko din ang family nya.

Family, lovelife, address, career

Whats in it for you, doc?
Wanted to elevate the standard of fan
yung may afford, may say, they better listen to us
we have the market for albums, magazines
we're not the stereotype
club members: accountants, lawyers, advertising execs, students, medical representatives, district managers

May mga events na I get special treatment. Like when I get to sit sa harap or sa unahan near the stage. "Kakaway ako sa mga tao na dito ako nakaupo". May representative, my mukha yung grupo.

Yung mga chizmiz about DD or Marian, aayusin. Nauunang nakaalam re official statements ng dalawa. We get special treatment sa movie sites, taping. We also organize events or contests. Special screening binili namin halos lahat tickets. We invited the press and we let them know of our efforts as fans. DWIZ nababanggit kami.

Sometimes nakakabonding pa nila ang kapamilya. Kakain with kapamilya in some events ni DD at Marian.

Happy ako na kilala ako ni DD at Marian and ng mga kapamilya.

She is happy that DD trusts her inputs. Proud that she is connected kay DD. Friendship is envied by many.

Kami pa ang gumagastos.

Boses ng Kabataan promo, nag judge ako

She brings fruit for DD. She prints articles about DD and Marian for him to read. Masaya na. She also knows her boundaries. Esp sa pag ti text. Ayaw naman na mag araw araw text. Wag yung gigil. Ayaw nya tumawag. Pag text na walang sagot ok lang. Pero pag call na walang sagot, masakit sa loob. Kaya text na lang.

I distance myself as a fan pa rin.

Sometimes I cut clinic just to attend events of DD and marian. But I dont go to SOP or Party Pilipinad kase Sunday family day.

US fans sent $500 to gail para pambili ng album ni DD so that it will reach Gold Status. Fan group ni DD ang gumalaw.

Eto ang hatak: pag kinuha si DD na endorser or ano pa man, fans club ang gagalaw.

Bday ni DD she was face to face with DD and Marian. Though they didn't talk of personal stuff. They know of her work, specialization.

Pag kausap ka ni DD, talagang tinitingnan ka nya sa mata. Yung mga gifts na a appreciate nya. He focuses sa kausap.

He can ask DD Kung ano isusot sa ganitong event. She is privy to some secrets. In front of other people esp fans, nag bebeso sila, bulong bulong. She can hold DD hands, hatakin sa isang gilid and tell him something. Nakanganga ibang fans.

Internet, she tells of others her opinions. Mga inggit issue, envy.

Gail served as a bridge. DD gifts pinapadala thru gail.

She meets and buys gifts for fans. When she was in Canada, she got a round trip ticket for free, from Vancouver to Toronto and back from a fan ni DD. The fan wanted to meet her and wanted to give gifts for other fans in pinas, also to DD.

They are being "quoted" by others in the Internet, newspaper, radio.

They can affect programming decisions. If they dont give DD and Marian a teleserye sa primetime, US fans will pull out subscription to Pinoy TV. They send emails letters to management. The management also do things to help sway the fans, temper sentiments.

what's in it?
Wanted to elevate the standard of fan
yung may afford, may say, they better listen to them
they have the market for albums, magazines
they're not the stereotype
club members: accountants, lawyers, advertising execs, students, medical representatives, district managers

May mga events na she gets special treatment. Like when she gets to sit sa harap or sa unahan near the stage. "Kakaway ako sa mga tao na dito ako nakaupo".

Yung mga chizmiz about DD or marian, aayusin. Nauunang nakaalam re official statements ng dalawa. They get special treatment sa movie sites, taping. They also organize events or contests. Special screening binili nila halos lahat tickets. They invite the press and let them know of their efforts as fans. DWIZ nababanggit sila.

Sometimes nakakabonding pa nila ang kapamilya. Kakain with kapamilya in some events ni DD at Marian.

Happy sya na kilala sya ni DD at Marian and ng mga kapamilya. She is happy that DD trusts her inputs. Proud that she is connected kay DD. Friendship is envied by many.

Kami pa ang gumagastos.

Boses ng Kabataan promo, nag judge c doc gail.

Pero pag kol na walang sagot, masakit.

Why did u like DD and Marian?

There is chemistry between the two of them. That there is a promise that someone out there is for you.

She was part of the journey. Of the kilig. She was somehow instrumental sa pag kaka developan nina DD Marian. She trusts that he is a good person, and the family. Nakasama na ang buong family.

INTERVIEW WITH MEL FLORES, 42

Hindi ko alam kung pano talaga kami nag meet. I am from the academe, I was helping my ex-boss's wife, do errands. Sinamahan ko yung group na DongYanatics sa SOP in 2007.

I only know DD sa tv.
Every Sunday madami akong taong nakikilala na fellow fan. I enjoy the company of fellow fans.

DD treats his fans fairly
some people he trusts more
gives something more
treats special

I can text him, I can ask him anything
Kilala ko na ang pagkatao ng bata
Hindi basta nagtatanong ng lahat na katanungan sa isip ko.
Pag nagkikita kami, gracious ako.

The relationship has evolved thru time
Pag may mga activities kami, he comes over. We invite him sa fans' events.

He treats his fans as friends with different levels of closeness.

Satisfaction is the friendship and the tiwala

Bcoz of the friendship naiba pananaw sa buhay.
She doesnt need to work peri she works para may pangsustento sa DongYanatics. Abunado palagi
pag may taping, pupunta sa Fontana

Her husband works abroad and ang money is for the family

APPENDIX E
INTERVIEW WITH DINGDONG DANTES

INTERVIEW WITH DINGDONG DANTES

I am objective in dealing with fans
madami sila
they have freedom to do whatever in the organization
in the operations, in the activities

NGO = 30 Active fans

Friend sa skul
friend sa work
friend sa club
common interest - work related
tandem with Marianne
this is a way of giving back

Not all has a chance to be with us and be
involved in greater things like the Foundation
they are involved in the brainstorming
our relationship goes beyond the fan club
We have a common vision

5years ago there was a fan who was very active.
I was just starting sa industry
the fan was well-learned
she would give logical inputs
nung mahiwalay  ako sa partner ko, loveteam ko (karylle)
kinampihan nya si karylle
I discovered na mababaw yung loyalty sa akin.

Change the landscape of entertainment
marimar crossed demographics, all age brackets, abroad, nag ta trabaho
They were inspired, they felt it in their heart

Pre skul teacher gave advise na parang manager. Sobrang detailed
dapat alam Kung san pedeng tumapak or Hindi pedeng tumapak
distance yourself

50-50 sa lahat ng bagay
me + them = success
see passion in me
they react
they hold on
I do it for them
if you do it for yourself lang, hindi ka tatagal sa industry.
I recognize that they have clout
there should be equal responsibility
if they don't like what were doing

Pros and cons
they have access to the CEOs
they bombarded the CEOs emails

Hindi naman malulugi ang Pinoy TV kung nag pull out subscribers na members ng fans club dahil madami naman followers abroad ibang artista
